Interview with Ken Millard from BOSS (Betting On Soccer Strategy)
How
long have you been in the Horse racing and betting industry and what
experience do you have.
I started developing my gambling software approximately 5 years ago,
although I was interested in betting for many years before that. My
initial interest lay with horseracing but I never made a profit trying
to isolate single winners in a race.
One day I was walking
around the book department of W H Smith and I saw a book called The
Complete Horse Racing System; I purchased the book and was intrigued
about the system which it advocated. The system was multibetting,
or “Dutching” as it is commonly called. I had heard of
this method of gambling previously but I soon realised that without
the use of modern technology the old professionals didn’t have
a chance of using its true flexibility when designing bets.
It was at this point that I stopped “pawing” over form
and started to adopt a more statistical approach to placing my bets
and using Dutching as my main method of creating profits. I wrote
my first piece of gambling software, which I finally called Winners
Only. At this time of my life I was employed as a Management Accountant,
working in the Finance Department of a manufacturing company, and
one of my colleagues suggested I should sell my software. I took his
suggestion on board and opened up my first website.
I was quite flattered when I later discovered that my software title
was being copied by a gambling service provider (naming no names),
re-labelling it and selling it on.
It was also given a write-up in a monthly gambling publication.
During February 2003
I was made redundant. I decided I didn’t want to work for anyone
else so I decided to market more software and to pursue gambling with
more vigour. I have now written a handful of software titles and written
a manual:
The
BOSS (The Betting On Soccer Strategy)
This, in addition to my Punter’s
Paymaster software has been the most
consistent performer.
Punter’s Paymaster V3
- Visit
This is a very powerful Dutching program which
allows individual Profit Targets to be set for each contestant being
considered for backing. It is not isolated to horseracing; it can
be used on almost any betting event.
Punter’s Laymaster
- Visit
This is a combined program/e-book package aimed
at punters who prefer laying on the exchanges. The program helps those
who wish to lay more than one horse in a race (up to 5) and the e-book
gives advice on which horses and which courses to consider for laying.
Punter’s Football Exchange
- Visit
This Dutching software may be used with traditional
bookmakers or on the exchanges. It is split into two parts –
Back Only and Back OR Lay. The first part is aimed at those wishing
to cover 1 or 2 of the possible outcomes of a football match, using
traditional bookmakers, to give a required profit target. The second
part is aimed at those wishing to use the exchanges where the program
will advise whether it is better to BACK or LAY.
Punter’s Blueprint
- Visit
This is a horseracing forecast program which
was written at the request, or shall I say pressure from some existing
customers. Without inside information the average punter is at the
mercy of high fee tipsters or left to his/her own devices to select
possible winners. Before attempting to design this forecasting program
I studied a number of books so that I could establish the most important
factors affecting a race. These factors were programmed into Punter’s
Blueprint but I didn’t want to leave the program too rigid,
so, in addition to the default settings, I incorporated an “importance
scale”. This scale allows a user of the software to impose his/her
own idea as to the strength of importance each factor has to the outcome
of a race. Following input of required data, which can be obtained
from Racing Post online, the software lists the horses in order of
winning preference.
I’ve had feedback from some customers stating that they also
use this software for selecting horses to lay on the exchanges.
Betting Exchange Trader
- Visit
When Betting
Exchanges came on the scene I soon
jumped on-board to look into new ways of making money from gambling.
I expected a lot of punters were doing the same but I soon realised
that a lot of those moving to the exchanges were only using them as
they had been using traditional bookmakers; they were only BACKING
and not taking advantage of the powerful LAYING facility. It was at
this point I decided to put pen to paper and put together a manual
describing a number of scenarios and pointers for making trading profits
on the exchanges.
Can you list
and describe the main betting exchange software available at progamblingproducts.co.uk
I think there are too many products to cover
in detail.
In addition to my own developed software I promote products developed
by a number of 3rd parties.
Some of the products listed on my website are aimed solely at the
Betting Exchange user - these may be Betting Exchange trading/laying
manuals e.g. Layer’s
Edge or devoted software like
Bet-IE.
Other products may be used by the Betting Exchange
user and/or by those using the traditional bookmaker – these
may be horse selection system manuals e.g. 27 Horse Racing Systems
or software e.g. Punter’s
Blueprint.
Over the past few years I have realised that gambling, like most occupations/professions, needs “tools of the trade”. It is for this reason that I have attempted to bring my own products and those of other developers/authors to the attention of existing and potential punters so that they can consider the products for their toolbox.
What are the best settings for your new BOSS
football trading software?
The
BOSS (The Betting On Soccer Strategy) is not classified
as trading software.
The
BOSS may be used with traditional bookmakers and/or Betting
Exchanges; I usually use Betting Exchanges when better
odds can be found. There is no “laying” and there is no
“in-running” involvement unless a user wishes to monitor
a structured bet and adjust bets as the match unfolds. I usually place
my structured bet and forget about the match until I’m ready
to check the result.
The program installs with 3 default settings, which can be overwritten/adjusted,
and a completely blank canvas for a user to adopt his/her own ideas
from scratch. I just look for a few clues and put The
BOSS to work.
Can you explain
the best way to benefit from The BOSS?
I think the best way to answer this question is to say, “Use
it”.
An in-depth knowledge of football is not required which makes the
program very easy to use. There have been occasions when I haven’t
even looked for the clues which I normally look for when using the
software, and because statistics have been on my side The
BOSS has given me the payout I asked for.
How much on average can people
who use your software expect to make per week if used correctly?
This depends on the individual and their
comfort-betting zone.
The
BOSS is so flexible it allows Profit Target or Total Stake
settings. The percentage return will depend on these settings.
Profits can be built steadily or as quickly as required. With matches
being played almost ever day of the week a user may wish to bet whenever
matches are being played; another user may isolate his/her football
betting to a Saturday when they can bet on a whole list of matches
(No accumulators or fancy named bets are involved).
Can you offer any advice, tips or secrets to making money on the betting
exchanges and using The
BOSS software or a combination of the different betting
software you have available?
At this point in time I don’t wish to discuss my betting techniques;
as a software developer/author I might use my methods in future projects.
I don’t think The BOSS requires any advice except the advice I would give to any user of a new system/method – take things easy at first until you are happy with what the system/method can do for you.
Can you tell me a few of the strategies
you and your customers have employed to benefit from The BOSS?
I tend to use one of the default settings
installed with the program without too much adjustment. Generally,
I use The
BOSS at a rate of one match per day when a match is available
- this helps me to maintain the level of staking I have adopted when
using The
BOSS. I have been using 10% of my betting bank as my betting
stake level but I believe I could increase this level following the
fact that The
BOSS has not given me any long losing runs. (Yet another
win tonight, 11th January 2006, with Blackburn V Man Utd).
One user I know has done very nicely from betting on a list of selected matches on a Saturday - don’t forget this does not involve any accumulators or fancy named bets – just treating each match as an individual entity without relying on the result of other matches.
Are there any
specific staking plans you would advise using?
I have always found using a percentage of my betting bank an adequate
staking plan.
Staking
plans form a subject in their own right and can be as simple
or as complex as a user wishes them to be. At the end of the day a
staking plan should allow adequate growth levels to be made and at
the same time provide a buffer which can cover abnormal losing runs.
What is the best feature of the software and
why?
The best feature of The
BOSS is its flexibility.
It allows a user to quickly structure his/her strategic bet with the
required criteria.
Do you have any further developments
in the pipeline?
Following the development of The
BOSS I have been ignoring my horseracing activities in
favour of soccer betting. During this period I have been paper-trading
a certain type of horse race using a theory I had in mind. I’m
not saying this is a new method but what I would like to do is to
analyse my theory over all UK courses over at least a twelve month
period, to establish, or not, whether my theory can be isolated to
some courses more than others.
This may take a long time, and the one thing that may make it even
longer is that I don’t want to think I’m back at work
– analysis, analysis, and analysis.
